The Basilica of Saint Peter is the mother church for all the Catholics in the world.  For that reason, it has been and continues to be a primary pilgrimage site for Christians.  It was built by the Emperor Constantine on the top of the tomb of Peter the Apostle, the first Roman Pope. Between 1500 and 1600 AD, it was completely rebuilt by the greatest Italian architects, including Bramante, Rafael, Michelangelo, Maderno, and Bernini.
